Tieria’s gaze is laced with open confusion as it shifts uncertainly between the older student, standing uncharacteristically stiffly in front of him, and the unadorned little box that has been pushed into his hands.
“Neil?” he asks, clearly unsure what to think. The fact that Neil has bought him a gift is, in and off itself, nothing new – in fact, Tieria has already had to remind the other man on several occasions to stop buying him so many things – but this time…
Tieria’s eyes trace the smooth surface of the simple, white gold ring still sitting securely in its box. It’s the first time Neil has ever bought him jewellery – mostly because Tieria isn’t used to wearing any – and the purple-haired student can’t help but wonder about its significance.
“I, uh…” Neil, starts, scratching the back of his head, a tell-tale sign that he’s nervous. “I just wanted to get it for you, because… Well, you know. You don’t have to- I mean, you can wear it on any finger you want.”
At that, Tieria’s gaze shoots up from the ring, his eyes locking with Neil’s for a moment and a slightly startled expression flickering across his face as the full meaning of the words hits home. Then, his eyes drop back to the box in his hands as a warm, amusedly tender smile curves his lips.
“How about”, he murmurs quietly, softly as he closes the distance between them and hands the ring back to Neil, “you put it on the finger that you want me to wear it on?”
For a moment Neil’s expression is unreadable, varying somewhere between disbelieving and cautious, but as Tieria unhesitantly offers out his left hand, followed by the most open and loving look of trust he has ever given anyone, the older student’s face breaks into a wide, relieved smile.
Slowly, his hands shaking lightly, Tieria notes, Neil takes the ring out of its box and easily slips it on the ring finger of the purple-haired young man’s left hand, before gathering him in a fierce bear hug.
“I love you, Tieria Erde”, the words are mumbled into the hair behind his ear, hot and possessive, and Tieria can’t stop the answering almost silly smile spreading on his face.
“I love you, too”, he mumbles into Neil’s shoulder, before an airy chuckle escapes him. “Although your proposal technique could definitely use some work.”
